The son of Carl Edward Montray and Lady Anne Trimble, Ed was predeceased by his parents, sister Peggy, and brother Paul. His first wife, Margaret Ray Sullivan, from whom he was divorced, died in 2012. Surviving are his two daughters by his first marriage. His second wife, Marilyn Morrissey, died in September 2019.

Ed Montray joined the US Navy and became a decorated World War II seaplane pilot, based in the Philippines. His personal decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross and six air medals. Ed's Citation for the Gold Star states:"For meritorious achievement in aerial flight while attached to Patrol Bombing Squadron TWENTY during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Pacific War Area from 4 April to 16 April 1945. Participating in five flights in an active combat area, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Montray contributed materially to the success of his squadron. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest tradition of the United States Naval Service."

After his Navy service, Ed returned to New York and attended New York University, briefly considered an opportunity in aviation, but instead took a job as transportation manager for the Sinclair Oil Co. and began a long career in the oil industry. He was the longtime owner-manager of the Compass Oil Company of Upper Saddle River, N.J.
