Thomas Kennedy was the son of James & Margaret (Cottrell) Kennedy. Thomas had 5 siblings, John (Union Civil War vet), Bernard (died in Andersonville Confederate Prison), Mary Ellen, Anna (Gannon) and Cecilia (Bobbitt).

Family stories tell the Kennedy's working on the Erie canal. In the 1840s they moved to Chicago, IL and then to Marshall County, IL.

Thomas is seen in the area in the 1850 & 1860 IL census but then there is no information on him. Thomas never married so he was able to do as he pleased.

Family lore was that in the 1860-70s he went off and was working at being a silver miner. Shakespeare certainly has a silver mining history so the lore must be true. However, Thomas never struck it rich.

Local Shakespeare history has it that Thomas was an early miner that later was locally known for the good horses he raised. In 1891, Thomas was a witness in the Shakespeare wedding of Edward & Mary Hill.

Family photos from a trip to NM in 1908 show Thomas living in a small one room shack on his 160 acre homestead 1 mile south of Shakespeare. There were some dogs & chickens but not much else.

In early 1913 Thomas took sick and was unable to care for himself. His modest estate records show he was staying in the Shakespeare hotel having the Tom Tong restaurant bring his meals to him. On 1 Mar 1913 Thomas left this world.

In 2004 when I made a trip to visit the grave of Thomas Kennedy, through conversations I learned that in 1891 Thomas witnessed the marriage of Edward and Mary Hill. Their son Albert, (still living) relayed this information. Considering the lapse of time, (over 100 years), and the fact that the population of Lordsburg is under 3400, this was quite an unusual find.
