Herbert Edwin Brooks, MD, age 85 of Bonifay, FL went to be with his heavenly father on August 19, at Doctors Memorial Hospital in Bonifay.

He was born December 3, 1929 in Washington, D.C. to the late Donald and Doris Coldrey Brooks.

Dr. Brooks served seven years in the United States Navy and was a flight surgeon. He worked as a Board Certified Family Physician for 50 years. He opened his practice in Bonifay in the summer of 1965 and continued to serve his patients until March 2015. Dr. Brooks was a past president of the Florida Academy of Family Physicians and Bonifay Kiwanis Club, also served Doctors Memorial Hospital as Chief of Staff and Holmes County Health Department Medical Director, both over 10 years. He held many other memberships and positions in various medical associations in Florida, along with local civic, educational, church and community boards. He was a long time member of First Baptist Church Bonifay. He enjoyed playing golf, traveling, hiking tall mountains and spending time with family. Dr. Brooks loved telling his jokes and stories as well as quoting Shakespeare and the Bible challenging others with his wit and humor. His “baby blue eyes and million dollar smile” have warmed and comforted many a patient’s heart and the hearts of his family members.

Dr. Brooks is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Kendall Brooks and Robert Brooks.

He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Cynthia Nall Brooks of Bonifay, FL; three sons, Donald Fredrick Brooks, MD and wife Denise of St. Joseph, MI, Geoffrey Wayne Brooks PhD and wife Lori of Bonifay, FL, Robert Edwin Brooks PhD and wife Ann of Tuscaloosa, AL; two daughters, Catherine Jean Brooks French and husband John of Placerville, CA, Erin Elizabeth Brooks Lauen and husband David J. Lauen, Jr. of Marietta, GA; 13 grandchildren, Benjamin Brooks, Joshua Brooks and wife Kaylee, Stephen Brooks and wife Kimberlee, A. Paul Brooks, Rebekah Brooks, Phillips Brooks, Rachael Brooks, Michael Brooks, Andrew Brooks, Isaac Brooks, Tucker Lauen, Arena Lauen, Sadie Lauen; three great-grandchildren, Edward Brooks, Joshua Brooks, Elijah Brooks; two nieces and one nephew; mother-in-law, Lois D. Nall of DeFuniak Springs, FL; brother-in-law, Warren Nall & wife Mary of Ridgecrest, CA.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, August 22, 2015 at First Baptist Church Bonifay with Dr. Shelly Chandler officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Bonifay Cemetery with Peel Funeral Home directing. Family will receive friends from 5-7PM Friday at First Baptist Church.
