She was on this earth for over 97 years. During those years, she experienced The Great Depression, World War II, The Korean Conflict, first human on the moon, births of her three children, births of her three grandchildren, and the births of her three great grandchildren. And so much more!
Martha was born on October 20, 1917, in Claremore, Oklahoma, to James and Louise Scales Allison. Martha was raised in McAlester, Oklahoma, where she graduated from high school. She also attended the University of Oklahoma in Norman, where she met her future husband.
She married E.H. "Ox" Marshall on March 22, 1941, in Opelousas, Louisiana.
Martha and E.H. moved their growing family to Independence, KS in the early 1950's and this was where they decided to stay. E.H. worked at the local newspaper until his retirement. Martha, a trained legal secretary, worked for several local businesses and finished her professional career as an administrator in the City Manager's office.
Both were very active in local activities, such as Brownies and Girl Scouts where Martha served as an occasional troop leader. She was also active in TRIAD and the local chapter of PEO. Martha and E.H. were fortunate to be able to enjoy some years when they could travel to favorite destinations throughout the world as well as many happy family trips.
Martha adored her family and loved to have them visit as often as possible. She was also an avid bridge player and enjoyed playing until just a few prior to her passing. We are so grateful to her many friends who dropped by the house to take her to and from the latest game! And to her friends who stopped by just to check on her and maybe share a cup of coffee (her favorite beverage.....except perhaps for one of her husband's "special" Bloody Mary's, as only he could make them).
Cremation has taken place and a private family burial will take place. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, E.H. Marshall, her son, Michael, her granddaughter, Robyn JoAnn Golay, and her sister, Emma Lou Daniels of Phoenix. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Golay of Kansas City and Jody Arseneault of North Berwick, Maine, her granddaughter Allison Riddle of Joplin, grandson Seth Golay of Kansas City, and three great grandchildren, Michaela, Lauren and Olivia of Joplin.
