A 24-year-old Lamesa man died on Monday after being shot by a deputy with the Lynn County Sheriff Office (LCSO) as he allegedly tried to escape in a LCSO vehicle, following a vehicle chase that ended in a collision with another LCSO vehicle and his arrest.
Joshua Omar Garcia was pronounced dead at the University Medical Center in Lubbock on Monday afternoon, according to a press release issued by Department of Public Safety Sergeant Bryan Witt.
Garcia initially was transported by ambulance from the accident and shooting location east of Tahoka to the Lynn County Hospital in Tahoka and then transferred by Aerocare medical helicopter to UMC, Sgt. Witt said.
“The Texas Rangers are investigating this incident at the request of the LCSO,” Witt stated.
He added that the DPS will release more details as they become available, since the Lynn County Sheriff Office was deferring all questions about the incident to the DPS.
Sgt. Witt did say that the incident started at approximately 11 a.m. Monday when a Lynn County Sheriff Office deputy attempted to make a traffic stop on a 2013 Toyota passenger vehicle in Tahoka.
The driver of the vehicle, who was identified as Garcia, refused to stop and evaded the deputy. In the chase that ensued, Garcia reportedly led the deputy north of Tahoka to Wilson and then back south toward U.S. Highway 380. Near the intersection of FM Highway 212 and U.S. 380, Sgt. Witt said, the Toyota collided with a LCSO vehicle.
