MIDWAY Kathryn Martin West 91 widow of Robert Smiser West died Tuesday August 18 2015 at her Midway KY residence She was born July 13 1924 in Lexington KY and was the daughter of Henry L Martin Jr and Mildred Pine Martin Kathryn or Kashie as she was known to many was a devoted equestrian from an early age As a small child she rode her pony and drove her pony cart all over the family farm later called the Waterford Farm which had been acquired by her greatgrandfather Jesse Martin in the 1800s She was very active in the Central Kentucky Pony Club later to become the Keeneland Pony Club which she had helped to organize She also contributed greatly to the success of the Junior League Horse Shows Kathryn was an active member of the Iroquois Hunt Club for over 50 years beginning in the late 1940s when the hunt was reorganized and she hunted with the Iroquois hounds into her early 70s She also joined the Woodford Hunt in the 1980s In 1950 Kathryn married Dr R Smiser West By then she had taken her first steps as a thoroughbred breeder by buying broodmares and the partnership of Kathryn and her husband with Hall of Fame trainer MacKenzie Miller and his wife Martha led to a thriving commercial enterprise Champions such as De La Rose and Chilukki as well as graded stakes winners Wanda Lite Light Tweedside and many others were bred by this partnership Smiser always said Kashie was one of the shrewdest judges of conformation that he had ever known In addition to her equestrian endeavors Kathryn was a talented gardener and flower arranger She enjoyed visiting gardens far and wide and implementing what she learned during her travels when she returned to her own garden In 1958 she followed in her mothers footsteps and became an active member of The Little Garden Club of Woodford County where she mentored new members and shared her knowledge her talents her garden and her flowers with everyone Kathryn provided flowers weekly for her church New Union Christian Church Survivors include two sons Henry Martin West Versailles KY and Robert Smiser West Jr Mary Midway KY a sister Mildred Martin Buster Midway KY and three granddaughters Maureen West Lindsay West and Claire West Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Friday August 21 at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home 3421 Harrodsburg Rd Lexington KY conducted by Rev Dr Nancy Jo Kemper Burial will follow in Midway Cemetery Visitation will be 5 7pm Thur at the funeral home Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass Frankfort 663 Teton Trail Frankfort KY 40601
