A graduate of Albemarle High School, she attended East Carolina University. She was a member of Silver Springs Baptist Church and was manager of Edgewood Place Apartments. During her youth, she was a lover of horses and won many blue ribbons, silver bowls, and trophies. She was the owner of Hillside Kennels where she was known for raising Yorkshire Terriers and Maltese dogs. Hartsell Funeral Home served the Carpenter Family.
