"Gone too soon, Emily J. (Pitzner) Johnston, a loving wife, caring mother, proud grandmother and friend, was born in Sacramento, Calif., on Nov. 1, 1938, and passed away unexpectedly in Placerville, Calif., on Aug. 1, 2015.

Emily grew up in California and graduated in 1955 from McClatchy High School. She achieved her associate’s degree from Sacramento City and then went on to a bachelor’s degree with a teaching credential from CSUS. She was passionate about teaching and dedicated to her students. She taught and moved around California with her husband until settling down with her family in Rancho Cordova, Calif. She raised her family while continuing to teach and making time to serve others, including Girl Scout leadership.

After retiring from teaching Emily moved to Kelsey, Calif., and later to Placerville. She was a wonderful mother, teaching her children respect and manners, which they hopefully continue — right? She loved to entertain and spend time with family and friends, cherishing the friendships she still had from high school. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, crocheting, theatre productions and Scottish country dancing with her husband. She was an avid reader, using her Kindle often.

Emily enjoyed life. She had difficulty managing her diabetes, but loved to travel nonetheless. She visited England, China and Turkey, to name a few places, and would have enjoyed venturing to a few more. Emily, you can now travel without limitations.

Emily is survived by her loving and devoted husband of close to 55 years, Ed Johnston. She will be greatly missed by her three children, Sandra, Marcia and Jeff Johnston. She was an adoring grandmother to Sean and Lucas Johnston, who brought great joy to her life. I know she is looking down making sure we are doing things right; I hope we make her proud. With heavy hearts, we let her go to be with those who have preceded her: her grandmother, Emily; father, Herbert; mother, Violet; and brother, Bill.

Memorial donations may be made in Emily’s name to the American Diabetes Association."
