Professional Hockey Player. Mortson, who was born James Angus Gerald Mortson, played defenseman for the National Hockey League's Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Black Hawks, and Detroit Red Wings from 1946 to 1958. He played minor league hockey from 1943 to 1945 when he turned professional by joining the Tulsa Oilers of the USHL. Mortson joined the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL in 1946 and played for them until being traded in 1952 to the Chicago Black Hawks. As a member of the Maple Leafs, he, along with teammate Jim Thomson, were known as the "Gold Dust Twins". Mortson played for 4 Stanley Cup winning Maple Leaf teams (1947, 1948, 1949, and 1951). He then played for the Chicago Black Hawks until he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings where he spent one season. Mortson played in eight NHL all-star games during his professional career. After leaving the Red Wings, he played for several minor league teams until retiring in 1967. After retirement, Mortson went into the business world.
