Laura (Elston) Copeland, 83, of Rising Sun, died Friday, February 18, 2005 at Shady Nook Care Center in Lawrenceburg. She was born April 12, 1921 in Cross Plains the daughter of James Thomas Elston and Laura Agnes (Webster) Elston, both deceased. She married Ross P. Copeland on February 1, 1942 and he preceded her in death on August 19, 2003.
Survivors include four sons, Gene and wife Jo Copeland of Breckenridge, CO, Lanny and wife Mica Copeland of Frisco, TX, Gary and wife Judy Copeland of Rising Sun, Monte and wife Sheila Copeland of Austin, TX; one daughter, Susanne Copeland Fortune of Tallahassee, FL; one brother, Raymond and wife Hazel Elston of Shelby, NC; one sister, Lola Wood of Winter Haven, FL; twelve grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and Lawrence Elston and two sisters, Grace Stephenson and Clarise Elston.
Mrs. Copeland was a bookkeeper for Cross Plains State Bank and Rising Sun State Bank. She purchased Central Hardware in Rising Sun in 1963. She was also the bookkeeper and co-owner of Village Hardware in Dillsboro, Hilltop Hardware in Clemons, FL and Valley Supply in Rising Sun. She was a graduate of Central High School in Jefferson County and a member of the Gideon's Auxiliary and the Rising Sun Church of Christ.
Visitation will be held Sunday, February 27, 1-3 p.m. at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun.
Funeral services will follow visitation at the funeral home at 3 p.m. with Brother Greg Matthew officiating.
Burial will be in the Rising Sun New Cemetery. Memorials may go to the Rising Sun Church of Christ Building Fund, Gideons, Rising Sun Fire Department or the Rising Sun Life Squad.
