Astronaut. A native of Pinehurst, North Carolina, he joined the U.S. Space Program in 1992. He flew on-board the Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-78) during its 16 day mission in 1996. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina where he majored in pre-med and also attended Duke University where he graduated with a medical degree in 1975. Following graduation from medical school he worked as a sports medicine physician at Iowa State University before beginning a career in the U.S. military. He joined the United States Navy in 1986 rising to the rank of captain. He served as a flight surgeon on-board the aircraft carrier USS Ranger and also served in the same capacity as a member of the United States "Blue Angels" from 1988 to 1990. He was the recipient of the Navy Achievement Medal, the National Defense Medal, the NASA Space Flight Medal, and the Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star. He died an apparent suicide, following a long illness.
