SSG. Graham of Brazoria, Texas, was happy to be sent to Iraq because his father and brother had already been sent to the Middle East. At one point, they had all three been there. Two in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. He was upset when he found out his dad and brother got activated before him. He thought, If they can go, why can't I go. His father, Thomas, returned less than two months prior from Afghanistan, where he served with the Indiana National Guard. Nicholas Graham, a brother, returned in March after serving in Iraq with the Marines. He served 10 years in the Marines after graduating from Grove City High School in 1989. He was inactive for a year, then was reactivated after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. By then he had moved to Texas where he joined the National Guard. His wife, Jeannette, still lives in Brazoria. A formal dedication ceremony was held Nov. 10 2007 in Grove City at the new Staff Sgt. Shawn A. Graham Veterans Memorial Bridge, so named in April 2007 by the Mercer County commissioners to honor him. He was 34.
