Josiah was the son of Benajah & Abigail Martin. While his parents settled in Marshall County their burial location is unknown.

Josiah settled in Marshall County in 1833 the year after the Blackhawk Indian War was over. He was amongst the earliest settlers in Marshall County.

Josiah was a farmer and between 1835-39 acquired 240 acres of land from the Government.

On 5 Sep 1833 he married Courtney Forbes the daughter of Caleb & Mary (Curling) Forbes.

The couple had 7 children, Caleb, Benjamin, Van Buren, Charles, Mary, Sarah & Margaret (Curran). (they are all buried in this cemetery)
