Justin H. Bates was born in Lorraine County, Ohio, June 9, 1843, and passed away Oct. 5, 1926, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Grace Kemp, Sigourney, Iowa, being 83 years, 3 months and 23 days of age.

At the age of 11 years he was brought to Tama County, by his parents, the family making its home on a farm a few miles northeast of Toledo, his father entering the land as a homestead from the U.S. Government. From then on, with the exception of five years spent on a homestead in Colorado, Mr. Bates was a resident of Tama county, a period of about 67 years.

On Oct. 7, 1864, he was married to Miss Myra A. Wing, the daughter of a pioneer physician, who passed away on Sept. 8, 1917. Of the eight children born to their union, five survive. They are N.N.Bates, of Tama; Mrs. Grace Kemp, of Sigurney, J.B. Bates of Fort Sheridan, Ill., James Bates, of Pekin, Ill., and Mrs. Edna Speaker, of Lake View.

He had been a member of the Christian church since youth, was a charter member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge of Toledo, and also belonged to the M.W.A.

Since the death of Mrs. Bates, he had made his home with his children, spending a considerable part of the time with the Speaker family. He was loved and esteemed by all who knew him in this community, and his passing will leave a real vacancy in the circle of his friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 7th, from the house of Mrs. Kemp in Sigourney, and on the following day at 10:00 o'clock a.m. from the Harrison Chapel in Tama, the Rev. R.A. Smith of the Baptist church officiating at the latter service. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery near Tama, which has been the family burying place for many years,
