Samuel served in Company H of the 104th Illinois Infantry. He joined up on 11 Aug 1862 for 2 years. Info shows that his residence was Osage, LaSalle Co, IL. He was 30, a native of Carr County, Ohio. He was married and worked as a farmer. Samuel was tall for the time, 6'2" had dark hair & eyes.

Samuel was discharged from the Union Army at Bowling Green, Ky as disabled on 30 Nov 1862.

Note Illinois Veterans records show 15 different name Samuel Porter(s). Three of them also were also from LaSalle County.

The 1860 Census for Ottawa, LaSalle County, IL (the county where our Samuel enlisted. It shows a younger & single Samuel (age is 23 not 27) living with his parents. Who were shown as being born in VT, not NY & KY per 1880 census below.

A Samuel porter was found in the 1870 Census living in Wenona, Marshall County, Illinois.

The Illinois Marriage index shows a PORTER, SAMUEL W & BARNARD, MARY J, were married 1867-09-11 in LaSalle County. Because of the middle initial W. this is probably one of the other Samuel from LaSalle County.

Samuel died in 1883 at the age of 50. What happened to his young wife Mary and son Charles?
