Her tender ministrations all are o'er;
Her smile, her voice, will greet us never more.
Her life lives on in memory of good;
She did with quiet grace to whom she could.
They loved her most, who knew her longest, best;
And count her now among the Saviour's blest.
----------
Addie R. Garriott began life October 4, 1867, near Greensboro, Henry county, Indiana, and died March 15, 1918, at her home near Knightstown, Henry county, Indiana after nineteen days of severe suffering caused by a complication of diseases. She was the third child and eldest daughter of Jane and Asa James. She was educated in the country schools and the Greensboro graded schools. At the age of seventeen she removed with her parents to make her home in Wilkinson, Ind. On October 19, 1889, she was married to Charles O. Garriott. They spent the greater part of their married life in Greenfield, Indiana, coming from there to his present home east of Raysville and Knightstown. Four children, one girl and three boys were born to them, all of whom died in infancy except, Ralph, the youngest, who had just entered the teen age.
Addie Garriott was a birthright member of the Friends church and was conscientious in living her religious belief. She was a regular attender at church when health permitted. During several years of poor health they spent much time in reading. Five times she read her Bible through, and daily she read a portion of it. She was of a retiring disposition, quiet and unassuming. For this reason and also because she was not physically strong, she preferred home and family above all social life and found her duty and her joy there. She lived for her family and especially the one precious child left to her devoted and motherly care.
Pure-minded, gentle, conscientious, thoroughly good and yet with a sense of humor, she was a fitting guide and companion for his tender years. Her training and influence in molding his character will not be lost in all his remaining years. He will miss the Saturday afternoon walks and good times with her. He will miss reading the evening story with her and kneeling in prayer by her side every night. But memory will bring only blessed recollections and we trust with her that worthy life will be re-lived in her boy. As her ambition was for him and his to please her he has the incentive to live as she taught him.
But while Addie Garriott was so devoted to her family and home, often overtaxing her strength in her eager effort to keep her house immaculate and with the atmosphere of comfort and cheer, she did not neglect her neighbors and the sick in the community. They felt her willingness to help and all remember many kind and thoughtful deeds of hers. Neighbors for twenty years, for a decade, and less all alike pronounce her a lovely woman without any discount, a good neighbor, a loyal friend, a devoted wife and mother who, when the great change came had both her earthly and her spiritual house ready.
Her parents, two sisters, and two brothers, having preceded her to the life beyond, she leaves one brother, Arthur James, the eldest child in their family. Besides him and her husband and son, two nieces and two nephews mourn her loss. A host of friends are glad to have known her who proved herself to be a friend both to God and man.
