Nevada Governor. Working in the cattle industry, he drove horses, mules and sheep from Missouri, to California, in the early 1860s. There he was a member of the California State Assembly, (1861-62). Settling in Nevada in 1862, he worked a cattle ranch in Elko County. In 1870, he was elected as a Democrat the 2nd Governor of Nevada, serving until 1879. While in office, the state prison system was restructured; and the University of Nevada was organized. Unsuccessful for election to another term, he retired from politics and resumed his previous business interests until his death at age 74.
