Squire Whitaker was the son of John Whitaker and Catharine "Katie" Weaver. His name was given in honor of his grandfather Squire Whitaker, a Revolutionary War soldier, one of the few survivors of the Wyoming Valley massacre, and a pioneer and early settler of the area around Hale Eddy and Deposit, NY.

Squire married Dorcus Travis (daughter of Thomas Travis and Bethea Mead) on 21 Jun 1821 (source: Whitaker Weaver Bible copied by Catherine Philetta Metteer-Cannon 6 May 1898, Milton, Oregon contributed by Winnie Cannon Pettyjohn, Chemeketa Chapter, DAR, Salem Oregon 1964).
