Son of Calvin & Amanda Hempsted

James Hempsted
Died, at his residence in the town of Spring Prairie, on the 23 day of February., J. V. Hempsted, aged 68 years. Mr. Hempsted was born in Oneida Co., NY, Dec 29th, 1821. He came to Wisconsin in the year 1848, and engaged in the business of blacksmithing, which pursuit he followed until about two months before he died. In the year 1851 he returned to the State of New York and married Miss Dinah Olmsted, who still survives him. Two children were born to them, only one of which (Mrs. Geo. D. Puffer) is living. Mr. Hempsted joined the Masonic order about 30 years ago, and has always been earnest and attentive, and, guided by the most sterling honesty, has been steadfast in his duty as a Mason.
He was stricken with paralysis on the 24th day of December last, from which he partially recovered, and his death, which came so sudden, was a surprise to his many friends, as they had hoped for his ultimate recovery. Mr. Hempsted was conscientious and upright in all his dealings with mankind, and his work was as good as his bond at any time and at any place where he was known, and his benevolence and frank, outspoken good-nature won for him the respect and esteem of the whole community.
In the domestic circle and among his near neighbors he was beloved for his amiable disposition and kindness of heart; and long years will come and go before even the little school children will have forgotten the kindly qualities of “Uncle Jim.” He had always lived a moral life until the year 1871, when he experienced religion, since which time he has lived a Christian life, and he died with the hope of a better world in the Great Beyond.
