WWII VETERAN

Peter J. Sciarrino Jr., 79, a World War II Marine Corps veteran and a former official of the Niagara Falls School District, died Thursday (Nov. 16, 2000) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, after a lengthy illness.

Sciarrino was born in Niagara Falls and graduated from the former St. Mary's High School in 1940.

He joined the Marines in 1942 and spent the war in the Pacific Theater, serving in Hawaii, the New Hebrides, Peleliu and Okinawa.

After his discharge as a staff sergeant in 1945, Sciarrino attended Niagara University and earned an accounting degree in 1949. In later years, he also earned a master's degree in business administration there.

Sciarrino operated an accounting office from 1949 to 1963, when he became a business teacher at Niagara Falls High School. After four years in the classroom, he was tapped as assistant to the district business administrator, a post he held until retiring in 1984.

In his retirement, Sciarrino was an active golfer and bowler, and enjoyed fishing.

He was a former Town of Niagara Republican Party committeeman. He also was a member of the Lions Club, the First Friday Club, the Niagara Frontier Restired Men's Service Club, the Saturday Morning Breakfast Club and Knights of Columbus Council 247. Sciarrino was a former member of the Sertoma Club. He was a parishioner of St. Leo's Catholic Church, Town of Niagara.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, the former Josephine Cirrito; his son Dr. Peter C. of Dunkirk; his daughter Dr. Mary J. Nicolais of Liverpool; three sisters, Miriam Leone of Lewiston, Sister Maralynn of Orchard Park and Lucia Beer; and seven grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Monday in St. Leo's Church, 2748 Military Road, Town of Niagara, preceded by prayers at 9:45 in Spallino-Amigone Funeral Home, 1300 Pine Ave.

Entombment will be in Gate of Heaven Mausoleum, Lewiston.
