Sam was an Army veteran of WWII. He was a radio man in the Asian theater, flying in Burma.

He was married first to Ida B. "Bettie" Steinmetz on March 3, 1947, at Chheyenne, Wyoming. She died in 1975. In October of 1976 he married Albertine (Rogers) Rego, widowed wife of his late friend Joe Rego.

He was very intelligent and had many interests, of which model trains and keeping a basement menagerie of birds were just two. He also hunted and fished. His step-son said he constructed a number of houses in the Burns Brentwood area of southwest Denver. He also owned a small strip set of commercial shops in central Denver that he rented out. He and Ginger lived in a two story town home on East Nassau Avenue in southeast Denver. He is said to have died of a sudden heart attack while in the middle of a telephone call.
