Gilbert Roberts, 1st Lt. Army Air corps, 846th Bomb Squadron, Eighth Air Force, based in England, killed in action by enemy antiaircraft over St. Lo, France, July 24, 1944. Was serving as navigator on a Liberator bomber which was shot down, exploding in mid-air. He had been in the army 5 ½ years, since Jan. 1939. First enlistment with National Guard field artillery in Hutchinson, with 130th F. A., Oct. 1937. Enlisted in regular army cavalry at Ft. Riley Jan. 1939. Transferred to field artillery in Dec. 1939, going to Hawaii as corporal with 52nd F. A., at Ft. Shaffer, Hawaii. Was at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii when the Japanese bombed that post and Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941. Operated an antiaircraft gun against the Japanese in that action. From Hawaii to Christmas Island, in the Pacific, helping repulse four enemy raids there. Overseas May 1944 to England, to join the Eighth Air Force in ETO. Was killed on his 18th mission against the Nazis.

Lt. Gilbert Roberts, missing since last July over France whole serving as a navigator on a Liberator bomber, is now listed by the war department as killed in action, his mother; Mrs. I. C. Flora, King's Gardens, has been informed.

Little hope had been held for the lieutenant since work was received form a fellow flier saying that he had seen Lt. Robert's plane explode in mid-air in the vicinity of St. Lo.

Born July 17, 1921, at Burrton. Roberts attended high school in Nickerson and Inman and entered the regular army in 1939. He served 37 months in Hawaii and the south Pacific, before entering the army air forces and taking navigation training at San Marcos, Tex.

The lieutenant went overseas in the European area a year ago this month. He had completed 17 missions before going on his last assignment.

Survivors are the mother and father, G. L. Roberts; three brothers, Cpl. Dallas Roberts, stationed at March Field, Calif.; Merlin Roberts of Hill , City, Kas., and Alan Roberts of the home; and one sister, Linda Roberts, also o the home.
