Dunn served in the 8th US Army as a private, corporal and sergeant. In 1899 he was appointed to the rank of second lieutenant with the 34th US Volunteer Infantry and served in the Philippines. In February 1901 Dunn was promoted to first lieutenant. While attending school at Ft Leavenworth Dunn became ill. He was sent to Hot Springs Ark for treatment. While at the Army Navy Hosptial in Hot Springs, Dunn died of paralysis on the morning of June 24, 1903. His sister, Miss Jennie Dunn, was at his side at time of death. Dunn is buried next to his father, Maj Thomas Searle Dunn.
