Joe Day Jr., 87, of Greenville passed away July 4, 2015, at the Briarcliff Health & Rehab. A memorial service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church under the direction of Coker-Mathews Funeral Home with Rev. Stephen Cotten officiating.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Joe was born June 26, 1928, in Rhea's Mill, Collin County, Texas, to Joseph H. and Betty (Eckles) Day.
He graduated in 1945 from McKinney High School and in 1949 from North Texas Teachers College with an elementary education degree to teach art. He later went back to North Texas to get his master's.
Joe taught at Thomas A. Edison Elementary School in Dallas where he met his future wife, Bobbie Leatherwood, who was also a first-year teacher there.
They married Aug. 30, 1951. They had three children, and in 1966 the family moved to her ancestral family farm in Greenville. Joe continued to work for Dallas Independent School District until he retired.
He was a faithful member of Kavanaugh United Methodist Church where for many years he taught an adult Sunday school class and served on several church committees, etc.
Joe is survived by his children, Becky Day Grunwald, Charles Day, and John Day; granddaughters Sarah Grunwald and Nancy Grunwald Anderson and husband Louis Anderson; great-grandchildren, Luke, Hannah, Asher, and Gideon Anderson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
