Joseph Paul Kilgore, Sr., 86, of Amherst passed away Friday, August 14, 2015 surrounded by family at the VCU Medical Center in Richmond after suffering a massive stroke.

He was born in Norton, Va., in the coalfields of Southwest Virginia to the late Lloyd Earl Kilgore and Dana Hunnicutt Kilgore on September 30, 1928. He was presented his Eagle Scout award in Troop 60 at Norton Methodist church. He graduated from Norton High School. He attended William and Mary College on an academic scholarship and as a manager of the baseball team, receiving a degree in economics. He received his Juris Doctor degree from Washington and Lee Law School where he served as Class Agent. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army as a Specialist 3rd Grade from the 64th Tank Battalion. He went into Masonry in 1950 at Suthers Lodge #259in Norton and transferred to Clinton Lodge #73 in Amherst. He was Master of the Lodge in 1962 and won the Grand Masters Award for the best lodge that year. He was District Grand Master in 1964. He was a 32nd degree mason in Roanoke. He organized the Masters and Wardens Association for the 21st Masonic district which is still operating today. He owned Amherst Realty and Insurance Co. for several years and practiced law in Amherst for almost 40 years. He was a member and past president of the Amherst-Nelson Bar Association and former member of the Virginia State Bar and Virginia Trial Lawyers Assoc. He served as Assistant Trial Justice in Amherst County and Judge in the Town of Amherst. He was appointed to the Governor's Advisory Hospital Council to oversee the construction of clinics and hospitals all over Virginia for 11 years. He was former Director of Fidelity National Bank and member of United Commercial Travelers, Amherst Heart Association where he served as president, Elks in Lynchburg, Shriners in Roanoke, Moose Club in Appomattox, Odd Fellows of Madison Heights, the American Legion and was involved in the organization of the Amherst Life Saving Crew. He was an active member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Amherst serving as Board Chair, Sunday School Teacher, Lay Speaker and Convention delegate.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, James Vernon Kilgore and his former wife Ella Meeks Kilgore.

He is survived by his son, J. Paul Kilgore, Jr. and his wife June; two grandchildren, Jennifer K. Stowers and Joseph D. Kilgore and his wife Felicia and three great-grandchildren, James Scott Kilgore, Ella Elizabeth Stowers and Abigail Rose Kilgore.

A service celebrating his life will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Monday, August 17, 2015 at Emmanuel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Nancy Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Amherst Cemetery with military honors.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. today, Sunday, August 16, 2015 at Whitten Monelison Chapel and at other times at the home of his son in Amherst.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the capital improvement fund at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 401 N. Main St., Amherst, VA 24521.
