U.S. Congressman. He was educated in Ireland and France and moved to America when he was 17. Cockran served in the House from 1887 to 1889; 1891 to 1895; 1904 to 1909; and 1921 until his death. A noted orator, his opposition to Democratic presidential nominee William Jennings Bryan and active support for Republican nominee William McKinley was an important factor in McKinley's 1896 victory. He returned to the Democrats and supported Bryan for president in 1900.
