After leaving his childhood home in Van Wert County, Ohio, Earl lived and worked in Huntington, Indiana, as a railway brakeman for Erie Railroad. He enlisted in the US Army on 15 June, 1918, and was assigned to the 156 Depot Brigade, and then to the Motor Transport Corps 339. Earl was honorably discharge on 31 March, 1919.

Earl married Eifle E. "Bobby" Dibble, and they moved to Detroit, Michigan, where Eifle's family lived. By 1930, Earl was a trimmer at an auto factory. At some point, he owned Little King Collision - "Complete service for all makes of cars, metal bumping and painting." Later, he and Eifle purchased a two-family building, then a four-family building, and then a thirty-unit apartment building which was four stories high. Their next endeavor was owning and manageing Addison-King Nursing Home on East Grand Boulevard. After retirement, Earl and Eifle resided in Howell, Michigan, where they were active in the Marr Community Bible Church.

He was a very caring man and generous to a fault.

Their children were John Harris "Jack" King (1922-1986) and Patricia V. King Peterson Stem (1934-1989).
