David was born Wednesday, March 6, 1940, in Lane, Kansas, the son of Alfred and Norena Pearl (Ritchal) Mathias.

He was a near lifelong resident of the Ottawa area, moving in 2012 to Osage City.

He graduated from Pomona High School with the class of 1959.

David served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Campaign from July 1959 to June 1963. He served on the USS Coral Sea from 1960 to 1963 attaining the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class.

David was united in marriage with Eloise Nadine McFadden September 2, 1960, in Ottawa. She preceded him in death February 18, 1997. He later married Janice McFadden November 2, 2013, in Michigan Valley, Kansas. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include his three children, Daniel Mathias and wife Christina, Duane Mathias , and Jo Ellen Treherne and husband Aaron; siblings, JoAnn Harding and husband Jim and Marjorie Mathias ; six grandchildren, Timothy Mathias, William Mathias, Daniel Mathias, Jr., Salena Chevez, Wesley Treherne, and Aiden Treherne; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his infant son, David Leroy Mathias, Jr.; parents, Alfred and Norena Mathias; and brother, Leo Mathias.

He worked as a painter for Ottawa Truck for twenty years, retiring July 23, 1993.

He was a member of the Michigan Valley Community Church, former member of Homewood Community Bible Church since 1978, Santa Fe Trail Riders Cycle Club (a family motorcycle club in the early 1970’s), and the Coral Sea Association.

David enjoys reconditioning old cars and trucks, doing things with his grandchildren and working around the home.
