Howard E. Chapman, 84, passed away peacefully on Sunday September 21, 2014.

Born March 5, 1930 in Scott County, VA he was a hard working son of William P. and Della Mae Addington Chapman. He served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army, building bridges in Stuttgart, Germany where he met his wife. He retired from Holston Defense in 1991, was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, American Legion Hammond Post #3, VFW Post 3382 and was the first Mercedes-Benz auto mechanic in Kingsport.

Howard loved the woods, hunting and fishing, and especially enjoyed cracking walnuts to feed his squirrels. He was a quiet and very likeable, generous person who was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 62 years, Edith Baeder Chapman; his children, Patricia Chapman, Mike Chapman and wife Bonnie, Lesley Chapman and husband, Scott Thurston; brothers, John Wayne and wife, Harriet (Kingsport), Luther E. and wife Dorothy (Bristol), James Preston and wife Anna (Dayton, OH); step grandchildren, Sherry Dykes and husband Sam, Karen Jacobs and husband Jimmy.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Marion Chapman; sisters, Margaret June Booher and Virginia Lee Chapman.

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm at Concordia Lutheran Church on Saturday, September 27, 2014 with Pastor Paul Becker officiating.

Burial will follow at Holston View Cemetery with military graveside rites presented by American Legion Hammond Post 3/265 will immediately follow at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va.

In keeping with Howards desire to help others in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Concordia Lutheran Church, 725 Truxton Drive, Kingsport, TN 37664.

Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport is serving the Chapman family.
