Nathaniel was probably born in the village of Raloo in County Antrim. He arrived in New York City with some of his siblings on 7 April 1847 on the ship Monterey, out of Belfast. He was a clerk and then a dry goods agent on the lower east side of New York City for several years. In the 1870-71 New York City Directory, he was listed as N.M. (Nathaniel Moore) Agent at 81 Watts Street. On 16 February 1870, he married a widow, Ada Cooley, maiden name Strong, in New York.

Later in life, he moved to San Francisco, although his business took him back and forth between San Francisco and New York. His 1890 San Francisco voter's record, accessed at the California Genealogical Society in Oakland, stated that he was a "capitalist" who lived at 1517 Golden Gate, and that he was naturalized in October 1856 in New York. In an 1897 letter from his sister Elizabeth to their mutual sister Isabella, Elizabeth states that the two of them are living happily together in San Francisco.
