Jonathan R . Turner was born on April 17, 1947 to Louise Turner of Java, Virginia
and embraced by the loving arms of John and Maude Turner who raised and
nurtured him as their own.
He attended school in the Gretna, Va. school system and was graduated from
Southside High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the Air Force. Sergeant
Turner spent a year in Tin City, Alaska and then was sent to Vietnam . Upon his
return, Jonathan ( better known as Joe or Jon), secured employment with a
number of companies including a long-term stint with Western Electric. While
studying at Delaware Technical Community College, Gloucester County College
and Camden County Colleges, he began working at Amtrak as an electrician,
progressing to management as a Contract Negotiator in Construction.
In 1977, he married Mary Fitzgerald . Their son, Julian, was born the next
year who he cherished , as evidenced by the immense number of photographs
that he took of him. He loved photography and for a short period, it was a small
business for him and his partner and confidante, Don Newlin.
He married Linda Richards in 1982 and two years later, their daughter,
Jocelyn, was born. He was extremely proud of the accomplishments of his
children and the feelings were reciprocated. Julian asked his father, along with
his best friend, to be Best Man at his wedding. Whenever Jocelyn had a
problem, her first stop was “Dad”.
In 2000, Jon was so proud to welcome his granddaughter “Wednesday” into
this world. This was our nickname for her until we found out her given name, Nia,
during her naming ceremony.
For many years, it was just PopPop and Wednesday. In 2013, he could hardly
contain his joy when along came Tristan Robert, our new source of
entertainment. Joe held on long enough to meet his third grandchild, Justus
Robert last November. Joe lost his arduous, nine-year battle with cancer on
Saturday, August 8, at 9:10 P.M.
Mourning his departure from our lives are his wife, Linda; son, Julian Turner,
(Veronica); daughter Jocelyn ( Stanley); and grandchildren Nia, Tristan and
Justus. A sister, Alice Neal - Gilar; brothers Griffin (Ernestine)Turner, Charles
Fitzgerald, Michael Fitzgerald, Roger Fitzgerald, and former wife, Mary Fitzgerald
- Turner; aunts, Annie Womack and Jean Turner as well as longtime friends
Donald Newlin and Bradford Hinson.
He was predeceased by his parents John and Maude Turner; brothers, John
Daniel (Jiggs) Turner, Jeffery Fitzgerald, and Carl Fitzgerald and an aunt, Mattie
