Although Danny never married, he was a favorite of his nieces and nephews. He served two duties during the Viet Nam War and returned with honors. One of his greatest disappointments was the way returning soldiers were treated by those who opposed the War. He won a golden pen award from the Dallas Morning News for his story about this subject. He was survived by his mother, Maxeyne Stringer Lyons, his father, Carl Edward Lyons, Jr. He was also survived by his brother, Carl Edward Lyons, III and sister, Sharron Lyons Houlihan.
