Son of John Cowan, born during Revolutionary War at Fort Cowan near Barksdale Ferry on the Savannah River. Married Martha Groce in 1801 with whom he had 13 children, several died in childhood and may be buried in this cemetery. After Martha's death in 1826 he married Jane Britt.
