John was the son of Andrew More (or Moir) and Jean Hutcheon, who were married in Auldearn, co. Nairn (now in the Highland council area), Scotland, in 1710. His father was a tenant farmer and later wheelwright.

He married Isobel Duncan on 22 Dec. 1735 in Forres, co. Moray, Scotland. The marriage was also celebrated in Auldearn, co. Nairn. They had several children together. Two of them--Alexander (born 1740) and John Jr. (born 1745)--emigrated to America and ultimately settled in Roxbury, Delaware Co., NY.

John was a squarewright (house builder) and owned a house and land behind the parish church in Forres, co. Moray.
In 1748, he and his wife relocated their family to Strathspey, where John became a sawmiller and millwright.

He was probably the John Moir of Abernathy who was present at the baptism of (namesake grandson) John Torrie in Dyke, co. Moray, in Dec. 1771.

The main sources for the above information are: 1) The History of the More Family ... by David Fellows More (1893); and 2) "Ancestry of John More and Betty Taylor in Scotland" by Bolard More, published in The Historical Journal of the More Family 8:32 (1991-92). Bolard More makes the following statement with regard to John More Sr.'s last years, death, and burial:

"... there are records of his being in Rothiemurchus when he was an old man and retired. He was there until at least 1790 when there is a record of his being a sponsor at one of his grandchildren's baptism.

Then apparently John More Sr. and his wife, Isobel Duncan, died in Rothiemurchus and were probably buried in the churchyard there, but there are no tombstones for them."

Thus, John's place of death is shown as Rothiemurchus above, and his memorial is tentatively placed in this burial ground. Note, however, that the reference to John being alive at the baptism of a grandchild in 1790 is questionable.
