She was born in Hollidaysburg, daughter of the late Frank and Edna Louise (Worley) Bender. She was twice married, first to Jack L. Gearhart in April 1954, then to Robert F. Leskowitz on July 8, 1982, both of whom preceded her in death.
Surviving are two daughters: Debbie White and Annette Polignone, both of Altoona; a son, Wynn Gearhart of Ocala, Fla.; two stepsons: Robert F. Leskowitz Jr. of Bellefonte and Bruce A. Leskowitz of Altoona; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Bender; a sister, Irene Campbell; and her twin sister, Betty Schulz.
Martha was a member of First Church of Christ and a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona. She retired from the Altoona Area School District in 1989 after many years at Keith Junior High School.
Martha loved to sing and dance. She played the accordion, guitar and organ. She enjoyed spending time with her lady friends at King’s Family Restaurant and with her extended family at Valley View.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4:15 p.m. Sunday, August 2, 2015, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona. A funeral service will follow at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in Stevens Memorial Chapel, officiated by Pastor Kathy Colebank. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
