Robert wrote this will about 4 years before his death. Perhaps he was having health problems, or maybe he just wanted to make sure Elizabeth and his son, Matthew Henry McCune, were taken care of. By this time, both of his daughters, Jemima Kyle McCune and Keziah Mary McCune, were married. His only other son, James McCune, was a doctor and living in Ohio.

Robert S. McCune, one of the witnesses, is from another McCune family. Perhaps he was related to Samuel McCune and wife, Isabel Brady, whose granddaughter, Hannah Jane “Jennie” McCune married Robert and Elizabeth’s grandson, Robert Stuart McCune. There were SO many McCunes in this area, it's not wise to speculate or make assumptions. Since he made his son. James. Executor along with his wife, Elizabeth, Executrix, it makes me wonder if Matthew was in poor health and he was more concerned with his future than James, who already had a career.

This will is very short. Sadly, Matthew Henry McCune died at age 37, living just one year past his mother, Elizabeth Kyle McCune. Before Elizabeth died in 1863, she had a very short will and left the estate to her two daughters and son, Dr. James McCune. I'm assuming some agreement was made to take care of Matthew. Contrary to what this memorial says, John Vandegrift McCune was not the son of Robert McCune and Elizabeth Kyle. He was added to this memorial a while ago. Attempts to have him removed have been ignored.
