William John Bess, 82-year old retired blacksmith, died at 12 p.m. Saturday at the residence of a daughter, Mrs. Davis Elrod, in the Smyrna community. He had been ill for seven years.
Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at High's Chapel, with Rev. David Sharpe officiating, and burial followed in the Mt. View Cemetery.
A native of Cannon County, he was born Oct. 11, 1883, and was the son of Bill Bess and Etta (George) Bess. He was married to Martha Ella Hale Bess, who died in 1936, and she was a member of the Baptist Church.
He is survived by four sons, Gaston Bess of North Carolina, Truman Bess of McMinnville, Bob Bess of Rock Island, and Hughie Bess of Centertown; five daughters, Mina French of Crossville, Nadie Elrod of McMinnville, Lucille Henderixson of Indiana, Vivan Wood of Morrison, and Ella Arnold of Murfreesboro; two sisters, Mrs. Lylie Winnett of McMinnville, and Betty Thompson of Murfreesboro; 37 grandchildren, and 30 great grandchildren.
High Funeral Homes was in charge of arrangements.
