OBITUARY: LEMUEL MILTON DICKEY, son of Hugh and Margaret Malissa (Craig) Dickey, was born at Yorkville, SC., October 25th, 1845. His parents moved to Arkansas about 1858 and the family remained there until after the war. In 1867, he married Miss S. C. Clements. Three years later he moved his family to Eastern Texas, locating in 1870 near Alto, where he continued to reside for more than fifty years, until death took him Sunday, March 16th, 1924. Mr. Dickey had a godly heritage was made an elder in the Presbyterian church when about 28 years of age, and one brother Rev. W. N. Dickey, entered the ministry, serving for many years.
Lemuel Dickey, though young, not more than twenty years of age, when the war closed, served faithfully in the cause of the Confederacy. After moving to Texas he became interested in the cause of his church, joined the Alto Presbyterian church and shortly thereafter became a charter member of Old Harmony Church, which was organized near Alto in 1874. With the faithful co-operation of his wife, he reared a large family of ten children, eight of whom survive him, and are good, intelligent, and faithful citizens.
Mr. Dickey was a modest, unassuming character, but one of those Christian men, who daily strove to live according to the summary of religion given by President Roosevelt, "fear God and do your own duty."
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. S. M. Tenney at the Old Palestine Church, Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock where his body was interred beside that of his mother and two deceased children. Mr. Dickey is survived by his wife, eight children, and a number of grandchildren.
His older brother, Rev. W. N. Dickey, was pastor of the Alto Presbyterian church in 1873-74, and has two sons in the ministry, Rev. W. P. Dickey, DD, Pastor of the Presbyterian Church, Kerrville, Texas, and Rev. B. I. Dickey, DD, Superintendent of Home Missions and Secretary of Stewardship for the Synod of Texas, who has office at Dallas. Dr. B. I. Dickey visited his uncle just two weeks since.
