Howard Curtis Berry, age 87, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 9, 2015.

Born in Norfolk, VA, on October 19, 1927, Mr. Berry was a son of the late Howard and Zola (Willoughby) Berry.

Howard proudly served his country in the US Army Reserves and in civilian life, he worked for the City of Newark Public Works Department, retiring after almost 20 years of dedicated service. Following his retirement he then worked for the University of Delaware in Public Safety and for Pioneer Concrete in sales. Mr. Berry was a member of the Nur Temple in Wilmington, Hiram Lodge #25 of Newark, and the Elkton American Legion Post #15. Howard loved working with brick and in his spare time enjoyed building many fireplaces. He especially enjoyed camping and spending time with his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne Berry, 2 brothers, Joseph and Ernest Berry, and stepson, James Earl sweetman, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Lare of Newark, DE, first wife, Doris Rae of Hampstead, NC; daughters, Deborah Rae Berry and her husband, Dr. Charles A. Burtnett, Sr. of Clementon, NJ, Diane Gloria Berry of Newark, DE, Holly Corrine Berry of Hamstead, NC; stepson Jody Lee Sweetman, of Newark, DE; sister-in-law, Eleanor Berry of Roan Mountain, TN; 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm until 8 pm on Thursday evening, August 13, 2015 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Friday, August 14, 2015 at the Calvary Baptist Church, 215 E. Delaware Avenue, Newark, DE 19711.

Interment will be held privately at the Head of Christiana Cemetery, Newark, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either the American Cancer Society, 92 Read’s Way, Ste. 205 New Castle, DE or the American Heart Association, 1096 Old Churchman’s Rd, Newark, DE 19713.
