Elaine Hanson was born on the family farm Sept. 9, 1920 in Schaller, Iowa to Glenn and Elizabeth Challman; both of whom have preceded her in death. She lived many years in Bemidji, Minnesota where she met Cal Hanson while she was in college. After Elaine worked awhile in Los Angeles, she and Cal were married in Bryant, Texas where Cal trained to be a pilot for the USAF. They moved many times during the World War II years and lived in Roswell from 1945-1947 and 1954-57. They moved to Roswell permanently in 1966 when Elaine taught math and P.E. at Mt. View Middle School and Mesa Junior High until 1977.

She and Cal were good dancers and went out every New Year's Eve. Elaine traveled to many places she wanted to see in America, often by herself. She played tennis tournaments in Bemidji and Roswell. She earned Silver Life Master in duplicate bridge, playing with the Roswell duplicate bridge association and directing numerous tournaments. She could be a formidable competitor. She rode her bike every day until she was 86 and hunted and fished with her family.

As a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bemidji, she received an Honorary Life Membership in the United Presbyterian Women. A member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Roswell since 1967, she taught Sunday school and was an elder in the church.

She was a great example of strength, independence, resourcefulness and faith.

She is survived by her son Westy Hanson and his wife Betty, and granddaughter Bonnie Cordell and husband Dustin; son Ben Hanson and wife Greta, and grandsons Ryan Hanson and Travis Hanson.

Elaine Hanson died Dec. 6, 2017. No services are planned. Elaine will be interred at South Park Cemetery.
