Jane Bailey Baum died on January 23, 2015, at age 90, after a brief illness. Born in Fonda, NY, Jane grew up in Syracuse, NY. The daughter of a physician and a nurse, she attended Goucher College, Towson, MD, graduating in 1945 with a major in physics, before attending Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing, Baltimore, MD, graduating with her BSN in 1949. She became a registered nurse. After earning her BSN/RN, Jane worked throughout her career as a clinical nurse, starting at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD, and retiring as director of Nursing at Bellevue Maternity Hospital, Niskayuna, NY in 1986. She worked at many hospitals in between, bringing her skill and deep passion for patient care to each institution for which she worked. Notably, Jane worked at Bellevue for 15 years, where she made many lasting contributions to the hospital and was recognized for her uncompromising commitment to quality patient care. She also taught medical/surgical nursing at Albany Medical Center's School of Nursing for several semesters. Jane was married to Parker B. Baum on December 4, 1954; they were married for nearly 60 years. They were inseparable throughout their lives together, living in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and New York, moving with Parker's career as a college professor of chemistry. Jane was an active and faithful member of the Episcopal Church, sharing her time and talents in many ways. At the time of her death, she was a communicant at All Saints' Church, Round Lake, NY. She was most recently a former member of the congregations of Calvary Episcopal Church, Burnt Hills, NY and Christ Church, Ballston Spa, NY. She served on the Altar Guild of every church of which she was a member. Jane loved gardening, sewing, cooking, antiquing and knitting. She also had a great interest in the history of her home, built in 1797, in Ballston Spa, NY. Jane was an accomplished, proud woman who committed her life to caring for others. She was always there to help a friend, a relative, or even a complete stranger. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her and will be remembered for her elegance, empathy and compassion. Jane was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dr. Parker B. Baum; by her parents, Eva H. Ginn and Dr. Albert A. Bailey; and by her brother, Albert A. Bailey Jr. She is survived by her children, Nancy Baum Delain of Schenectady, NY and James P. Baum and his wife, Debra, of Boxborough, MA; by her grandchildren, Teresa Delain of Schenectady and Morgan and Grayson Baum of Boxborough; and by her brother, James P. Bailey of Yorktown, VA.
