In 1860 he and his first wife lived in East Deer Township, Allegheny County, PA. He owned real property worth $90 and personal property valued at $40. He worked as a laborer. She was a first cousin of his and, as can be seen, none of their four children survived childhood, and she only lived three months after the birth of their fourth child.

In 1900 he and Mary and their three youngest children lived on a farm they owned, mortgage free, in Springdale Township in the same county.
