He was a retired United States Air Force Chaplain and Paratroopers, 11th A/B Division, U.S. Army and also served in 278th National Guard. He retired as a United Methodist Minister and was retired from the Greene County School System. He was a retired adjunct professor at Tusculum College and had served as Minister of New Ebenezer Presbyterian Church for the past 14 years.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Tusculum College, a Bachelor of Divinity and Masters of Divinity from Emory University, Masters from East Tennessee State University, and Phd. from Greenwich University of Oxford.
Survivors include his wife: Louise Mays Verran; four daughters: Melissa Hodge, Amy Verran, Mindi Southerland, and Candi Verran; 8 grandchildren, including a special granddaughter: Ashley Whitson; six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Fred and Veta Verran; two brothers: Lloyd Verran and Billy Verran.
At his request, a graveside service will be held at Andrew Johnson National Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 13th. The Rev. Jerry Jones, pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church, will conduct the service. The Greene County Honor and U.S. Air Force military honors team will convey military honors. There will be no formal visitation.
