Born in Vester Kipping, Falster, Denmark, Mr. Hanson emigrated to the U.S. in 1865, first going to Racine, Wisconsin, then Manistee. It was there he married his wife, Margrethe, in 1867. They had 3 sons and 2 daughters. Working his way up, Mr. Hanson became successful in the lumbering industry. In 1878, the Hansons moved to Grayling so Mr. Hanson could get logs from the forests to the Manistee River. He was generous to his community, donating land in 1913 for what is today's Camp Grayling, a Michigan National Guard base, in which guard and reserve units of the other branches of the Armed Forces can train. Mr. Hanson also made possible Mercy Hospital in Grayling. His religious affiliation is the Danish Lutheran Church.
