She began her teaching career in August 1954. She taught in Howard County Districts 43, 18 and 122 in Cushing. In the fall of 1957, she began teaching first grade in Palmer. In September 1960, she began teaching special education in Grand Island at Platt, Senior High and Connell. During this period, Joyce belonged to the Council of Exceptional Children, holding many local and state offices, and was a member of NU Chapter of Alpha Delta Gamma. In September 1976, she returned to fourth grade teaching at Jefferson and in 1977 she began teaching at Newell, where she remained teaching until her retirement in 1989.
