Sgt. David M. Hierholzer, of Lewisburg, Tenn. had enlisted in May 2002 and went through infantryman training at Fort Benning, Ga. He joined the Army because he believed it was important to serve his country. He was in the fourth grade when the family moved to Lewisburg from Defiance, Ohio. He was a cornerback and wide receiver at Marshall County High School. After high school, Hierholzer took criminal justice classes at the University of Tennessee-Martin and Columbia State Community College. David told friends he hoped to someday write a book about his experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan. He served in Iraq from September 2003 to September 2004, and went to Iraq in early 2006. His awards and decorations included the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge and Expert Infantryman Badge. Survivors include his mother, Christine Hierholzer, of Lewisburg; his father, David Hierholzer, of Culleoka; and his sisters, Melanie Blade and Dawn Ford, both of Lewisburg. He was 27.
