John Laird Mair, 1st Baron Lawrence GCB was governor-general of India 1864*1869. He served as Chief Commissioner of the newly formed province of the Punjab from 1853 to 1859. He reformed the agricultural economy, built roads and canals, and introduced a stable and fair administration. During the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Lawrence's clear thinking and military acumen played a crucial part in the recapture of Delhi.
