Helen Farris Ballard, age 92, died peacefully on Aug. 27, 2014 at Kindred Rehabilitation in Grapevine, Texas after a short illness. Helen was born July 23, 1922 in Colorado City, the daughter of Charles Richard Farris and Wenona Daugherty Farris.

Growing up, Helen and her sister Hazel worked in their father’s drug store as “soda fountain jerks”. Charlie Farris kept a close eye on them while filling prescriptions from his pharmacy in the back. Helen attended business college in San Antonio after graduating from high school and found work in Odessa writing advertising for a radio station.

In 1946, Helen married Burl Timothy Ballard after his return from Europe in World War II. Burl was born and raised in Colorado City also and they had known each other all through school. A year later they were the proud parents of twins, Charles and Linda. Burl, after a short stint owning and running a “shooting gallery” in a carnival, settled into the oil industry, owning a well servicing company for most of the rest of his working career. Unfortunately, oil wasn’t $105 a barrel and the family never got rich. Helen was busy raising their twins. She never worked out of the home until her children were in college.

Helen was an avid reader, gardener and seamstress. She loved bird and wild life watching from her porch in Fort Davis. In later years she became a talented beader, creating beautiful jewelry and ornaments out of seed beads. Friends and family have enjoyed wearing her bead creations for many years. She also enjoyed sending cards to anyone she felt needed a few caring words.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Fort Davis, Texas and could be counted on to take food to anyone in need. Being a life-long Christian, she told family often that she didn’t fear death, was ready to go to heaven whenever the time came and didn’t want them to be sad when she was gone.

Helen is survived by her son, Charles Ballard and his wife Teresa of Fort Stockton; her daughter, Linda Ballard Allen and her husband Lawson of Fort Davis; granddaughter, Amy Allen Parker and her husband Tim and their four children, Elizabeth, Will and twins Kate and Emily of Colleyville; granddaughter, Holly Allen Psifidis and her husband George and their three children, Evy, Chloe and Nicholas of Houston. She is also survived by her niece, Jeanie Godwin of Tiller, Oregon and her sister-in-law, Codie Ballard Allen and her husband, R.V. (Hoss) of Abilene and their family.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Burl; their infant child, Timothy; her parents; and her sister, Hazel Godwin.

There will be a memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Davis at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014,with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent in her name to the church, P.O. Box 832, Fort Davis, Texas, 79734.
