Johan Hauta and his relative Andrew were 2 of 61 Finns killed in the explosion and fire of Winter Quarters #4, a coal mine. The Finlanders were a group apart from the other residents of Scofield and Winter Quarters. They were reticent, mostly not speaking english and their customs were different. During the disaster they would not help handel or search for surviors. They believed it was bad luck to touch a dead body. Their lack of participation did not help their social standing in these communities. Also their names were very difficult to spell and mostly their head boards were not correctly spelled. After the explosion there were 200 dead needing interrment. Half the names were mispelled, esp. the Finns.
