Dorothy Corn Elder

Elder, Dorothy Corn was born in Manila, Philippines on February 11, 1925 to William Anderson and Clara Beatrice Brewer Corn. Her father, a Navy Lt. Commander, was stationed in Shanghai, China at the time of her birth. Dorothy, nicknamed "Dofie", was preceded, in both birth and death, by her sisters Clara Beatrice ("Billie") Corn and Margaret ("Margie") Blackburn Corn. As all military families do, the Corn family moved frequently, living in many cities on both US coasts over the next 22 years. In 1941, Dofie met James Tait Elder ("Tait"), son of Captain Fred Kingsley and Ethel Tait Elder, when they lived across the street from each other in Annapolis, Maryland. They were married on March 16, 1947. Dofie graduated from the University of Rochester with a BA in English and History, and then worked at the Naval Academy while Tait graduated from the University of North Carolina with a AB in Math. After marrying, and Tait's service as a lieutenant for two years during WWII, they lived in Baltimore until 1952 when Tait got his PhD in Physics from Johns Hopkins. Over their marriage of 68 years, they lived in Palmerton, PA; St. Paul, MN; Two Harbors, MN; and Olympia, WA. Dofie and Tait have 5 children: Jay (wife Peggy), Liz, Bill, Alex (wife Julie) and King (wife Joan). They have 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. From her birth, Dofie was bright, artistic, strong-willed, and principled. She was worthy of all the honor shown her for her loving dedication to her family and generosity toward others. Of all the talents she exhibited including being an exceptional potter, painter, musician, bridge-player and conversationalist, she would say her children were her proudest achievement. Dofie has always been the love and center of Tait's life. All who have known Dofie recognize her influence and will miss the vigorous, interesting woman she was. A memorial service will be held for Dofie Monday, August 17 at 6 PM in the second floor lounge of Eagle Crest, 2945 Lincoln Drive, Roseville, MN 55113. Cremated Ashes Scattered at Lake Superior*

"King's parents requested that their ashes be scattered in Lake Superior close to the house they built. The house was on Lake Superior right next to Gooseberry Falls [Minnesota]. It was sold about 20 years ago when they moved out to Washington State. So, we got as close as possible to their land and on Sept. 10th 2016 the family met on the shores of Lake Superior to scatter their ashes. (King's Dad and Mom both came from naval families, both grandfathers commanded ships at one time and Tait served in the navy)."
